What Is Diabetes?

August 20, 2007

Diabetes Mellitus is not just a disease that affects your blood sugar; it also affects your heart, kidneys, and circulatory system. Diabetes is a complex disorder that has many symptoms including unexplained weight loss, excessive hunger (polyphagia), thirst (polydipsia), frequent urination (polyuria), dehydration, leg pain when walking (claudication), fatigue, dizziness and itching (pruritus).

That is why it is so important that you do everything that you can to help keep your blood sugar levels as regulated as possible, so that you can keep yourself as healthy as you can. Having said that, what does it mean when you have diabetes mellitus?

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease that means that you have higher glucose levels than normal. This can be caused by your insulin production shutting down entirely, which is Type 1 diabetes, or it can be caused by a change in your insulin secretions, which is Type 2 diabetes. Normally, insulin is secreted by the pancreas when the blood glucose level increases, however, in a diabetic this process does not work efficiently. What are some treatments for diabetes mellitus?

Diabetes is separated into two main types – Type 1 and Type 2. Depending upon what type of diabetes that you have, your physician will recommend a treatment plan for you. If you have Type 1 diabetes, then the only treatment that will be offered is insulin, because your pancreas has stopped producing insulin entirely. If you are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, then the most common first treatment option is diet and exercise, especially if you are obese. Obesity can lead to Type 2 diabetes and by losing even 10% of your body weight; you may possibly be able to halt the progress of the disease. If diet and exercise do not do it, then prescription medications may be prescribed or in severe cases, insulin may be used. Your physician will carefully monitor your blood sugar levels to come up with the most helpful treatment methods for your diabetes mellitus.

Diabetes mellitus is becoming an epidemic in our country. In years past, it was not very common for a child to have diabetes, but with the huge increase in obesity, it is becoming more and more common for children to have diabetes.

If you are displaying any Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes symptoms then see your doctor as soon as possible. Diabetics are susceptible to many different health conditions, including blindness, limb amputation, and more. That is why if you are diagnosed with diabetes that it is important that you stay in control of your blood sugar levels and your disease. By taking care of yourself as carefully as possible, you will be able to keep yourself healthier for as long as possible, so that you can live your life to the fullest.
